Citizenship
Individuals who have obtained permanent residency and have resided in Canada for three years within a four year period are eligible to obtain Canadian citizenship. Proof of residence is verified through physically residing in Canada for the minimum term. However, in some cases if a person has periodically been absent within the three year period, upon providing evidence of a substantial connection to Canada during their absence, the same rights would be maintained. The right to vote in political elections, the ability to obtain a Canadian passport, and the non-revocable right to enter and live in Canada are all benefits that only a Canadian citizen would enjoy. A person with a permanent residence status could not benefit from these privileges unless they have become a Canadian citizen.
