Refugee applications are selected from Citizenship and Immigration Canada from overseas in specific situations. Each year, the Canadian government takes the initiative to resettle thousands of refugees in Canada from overseas. If the refugees have escaped their native land and are residing in another country, other than Canada, where they continue to be in a circumstance of danger, they may apply for refugee status in Canada. Also, there are numerous selected "source countries" where citizens of that country who are in life-threatening situations may apply directly to a Canadian embassy or consulate for refugee status.
