B-1 (Business Visitors)

Introduction

by which most people enter the United States, for the purpose of pleasure such as touring, visiting friends or family or sightseeing.

Basic Requirements

There must be a demonstrated intent to visit the United States on a temporary basis for pleasure. Applicants must be a citizen of a visa-exempt country (i.e. a visa waiver country or Canada), or obtain a visitor’s B-2 Visa, in advance.

Advantages

This is a speedy process by which a person can gain entry to the United States for non-business, pleasure purposes.

Disadvantages

A person cannot have permanent intent to reside in the United States or do business in the United States under this category.

Where to Apply

Those in possession of a valid visitor visa or those who are citizens of visa-exempt countries (i.e.. Canada and visa waiver countries) can apply for entry at a U.S. port-of-entry, which includes airports with U.S. pre-flight inspection. Commencing March 17, 2003, all Canadian permanent residents who are not citizens of visa waiver countries, are required to apply for a B-2 Visa in advance at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy. Appointments are required.
