B-2 (Tourists) Introduction The method in which many individuals enter the United States is for reasons of pleasure, for example as touring and visiting friends or family. Basic Requirements If an individual is entering the United States on a temporary basis for reason of pleasure, then he/she must disclose a verified purpose for their visit. Applicants must be a citizen of a visa-exempt country (i.e. a visa waiver country or Canada), or obtain a visitor’s B-2 Visa, in advance. Advantages This is an immediate process by which an individual is able to obtain permission of entry to the United States for non-business, pleasure purposes. Disadvantages Under this particular category, an individual would not have permanent intent to reside in the United States or conduct business in the United States. Where to Apply For applicants who have authorized ownership of an official visitor visa or those who are citizens of a visa – exempt country (i.e. Canada and visa waiver countries) may apply for entry at a U.S. port-of-entry, which includes airports with U.S. pre-flight inspection. All Canadian permanent residents who are not citizens of visa waiver country are required to apply for a B-2 Visa in advance at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy. Appointments are required.
