E-1 (Traders)

Introduction

This category is for applicants who wish to represent a company from countries that have a treaty of friendship, commerce or navigation with the United States, such as Canada. This person would exchange considerable business dealings with the United States.

Basic Requirements

Usually to be eligible for this category at least 50 per cent of the international trade conducted by the company that the applicant is representing has to be done with the United States. Therefore the U.S. offices should do a considerable amount of its business or trade wit the applicant’s country. The company’s ownership must be comprised of at least 50 per cent from a treaty country.

Advantages

As long as the applicant’s intention is to stay for a temporary period of time and not a permanent period, the applicant is not required to disclose the he/she is going to be in the United States for any precise period of time.

Disadvantages

Nationals of countries which do not have a treaty of friendship commerce or navigation with the United States will qualify for this category.

Where to Apply

Applications may be filed with the U.S. Consulate in Toronto for those applicants who are Canadian citizens, permanent residents who are citizens of treaty countries, or temporary residents, for example individuals with Canadian work permits that are valid for more than six months. Depending upon one’s nationality the location of filing for other applications may vary. In order to complete the paper screening process a personal interview will eventually be required.
